Marvel Phase 5 movies: what you can expect to see (updated)

Need to stay up to date with all the latest news from the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Start here with your guide to all the upcoming Marvel Phase Five movies.

1. Deadpool & Wolverine (released July 25th, 2024)

The enjoyably lewd and motormouthed Deadpool is set to make his MCU debut. As you'd expect, he's not going to play nice, making this a decidedly more adult-skewing entry in the comic book franchise. Star Ryan Reynolds has already promised that Deadpool's edges won't be softened, which is good news.

Throw in the presence of Hugh Jackman's Wolverine/Logan, complete with fan-favourite and nostalgic yellow costume, and there are plenty of reasons to expect a large-scale franchise reset. Wolverine's presence is something of a mystery but given the presence of the Time Variance Authority (TVA), first introduced in Loki, we're expecting some kind of multiversal explanation. And it anticipates the long-delayed arrival of the X-Men in the MCU, details of which are currently thin on the ground.

This iteration of Logan appears to be haunted by the decimation of the X-Men in his own particular universe. Quite how the snarky Wade will absorb this information is anyone's guess. But we shouldn't expect introverted, Harold Pinter-esque navel-gazing. Instead, we're likely to get a bloody and raunchy reinvention of the MCU, complete with saucy references to pegging and many more NSFW quotes.

2. Captain America: Brave New World (released February 14th, 2025)

Upon the retirement of Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), Sam Wilson/The Falcon (Anthony Mackie) is now set to adopt the mantle of the Star Spangled Man. Following the events of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, which paired Wilson with Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), the former now becomes a new Captain America for a troubled new age.

Luce and The Cloverfield Paradox director Julius Onah is at the helm of the fourth Captain America movie. Scroll down to check out the title treatment for the penultimate Marvel Phase Five movie, as revealed at Comic-Con 2022.

3. Thunderbolts (released May 2nd, 2025)

The Thunderbolts movie will be directed by Robot & Frank and Paper Towns helmer Jake Schreier.

So, who are the Thunderbolts? Broadly speaking, within Marvel Comics lore, they're a group of anti-heroes that consists of reformed Marvel villains. (Think of them as the Marvel equivalent of the Suicide Squad.) The history of the collective is a complicated one, and it's unclear how the comics history will translate into the finished film.

However, a recent Variety article speculates that the MCU likes of Helmut Zemo (Daniel Brühl), Ghost (Hannah John Kamen), Abomination (Tim Roth) and Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko) could make an appearance. All four characters were members of the Thunderbolts collective in the comics, so maybe this isn't such a pipedream after all?
