The annual San Diego Comic-Con came to an end last night and, as ever, the convention was home to many exciting reveals – and many of the biggest ones came from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, because of course!
Read on for all the exciting headlines that made this year’s SDCC.
Ryan Gosling has a monopoly on all the big franchises as he joins Marvel
Ryan Gosling joined his Star Wars: Starfighter director, Shawn Levy, on stage to reveal he’ll be in Marvel’s Ghost Rider movie, coming in 2028.
This follows earlier comments about joining a big movie franchise, in which the La La Land and Project Hail Mary star said no roles had “felt right” until he was offered the role in Starfighter. And now he’s hopping from Star Wars to Marvel, having spit-balled ideas with Levy on the set of Starfighter about a potential Ghost Rider film.
Not the first film to be made about the motorcycle stunt man who sells his soul and becomes bound to the Spirit of Vengeance, gaining special superpowers in the process. Keeping it in the family, his wife Eva Mendes actually starred alongside Nicholas Cage in the 2007 Ghost Rider film, so we imagine the pair will be swapping notes, too.

David Jonsson is announced as the new Black Panther
The third Black Panther movie is coming on 15th December, 2028, and David Jonsson was revealed to be playing the son of T’Challa, played by the late Chadwick Boseman. The EE BAFTA Rising Star winner joined director Ryan Googler on stage, with people in the audience shouting “Wakanda forever!”.

Avengers: Doomsday exclusive footage reveals rivalry between Doom and Reed Richards
Turns out the Fantastic Four and Robert Downey Jr.’s new character have history. An exclusive clip was shown in Hall H, in which Sue Storm narrates. Pedro Pascal’s character, Reed Richards, asks Doom (full name Victor Von Doom), “Victor, did you do this?” Doom responds, “All of you have lived stolen lives and now you must give them back.”
Ending with Doom bringing back to life an army of Sentinels, Sue Storm’s narration can be heard: “I knew he was lost, I didn’t realise he was broken.”
Asked if their characters have history, Pedro cuts in before Robert can get a word in edgeways with, “Besties!”

Will Deadpool return for Avengers: Doomsday?
Ryan Gosling appeared in Hall H, dressed as a slightly different looking Deadpool, namely his suit was a blue/grey rather than the usual red. Calling himself ‘Jeanpool’, Ryan Gosling described it as his Canadian tuxedo, and was on the floor of the convention taking pictures with fans unaware it was Reynolds behind the mask.
He even got called on to ask a question, to which he asked Paul Rudd, “Where is Thor and why is he crying?” Rudd came back with, “Um, because he’s a Wrexham fan?” taking a swipe at Reynolds’ football team.
Reynolds then asked if filming had been completed for Doomsday, seeming to be fishing for an opportunity to feature as Deadpool in the Marvel December release. Whether this actually confirms that Deadpool won’t be returning for Avengers: Doomsday is unclear. However, a fourth Deadpool film was confirmed by Reynolds at Fanatics Fest in NYC recently.

Other cast members announced to be returning to Avengers: Doomsday
The cast list just keeps – impossibly – growing. Hayley Atwell will reprise her role as Peggy Carter in Avengers: Doomsday.
Elsewhere at SDCC… Johnny Depp is revealed to be taking on an iconic Charles Dickens character
Returning to Hollywood, it was revealed with the first trailer drop that Johnny Depp will be playing Ebenezer Scrooge. Titled simply Ebenezer, Ti West’s take on the festive novel, A Christmas Carol, also stars Ian McKellen, Rupert Grint, Sam Claflin, and Daisy Ridley among others.
Johnny Depp appeared at SDCC transformed into Scrooge, with the first trailer celebrating the iconic roles that came before, including Edward Scissorhands and Jack Sparrow.
