Here are the video‑game references from Super Mario Galaxy we noticed on screen.

The Honey Queen and bee people from the Honeyhive Galaxy create a buzz

Seeing Honey Queen appear in the movie is a sweet moment. She plays a supporting role, with the bee people appearing in the background, but it’s enough to spark instant Galaxy-era nostalgia all the same.

Mario’s musical hits

There’s snippets of a Nintendo-like soundscape too. From the calm, lullaby-esque notes when Rosalina and the Lumas appear adding to the storybook feel, making us feel cosy and nostalgic. To the big orchestra vibes during the battle sequences and accompanying space travel. In Geeks and Gamers, composer of the movie soundtrack Brian Tyler (a Nintendo fan) says there are no less than 300 references woven into the score.

Star Bits shower down from the sky

As Star Bits fall onto the Mushroom Kingdom, the Star Shower music plays, signalling a big moment in the film, as it did in the video game. Sound, visuals and memories fuse together in a great moment. It’s like getting a cinematic gift.

We see Galaxy-era planets and hubs

In the film, the Gateway Galaxy gets an upgrade, shifting from starter planet to a fully functioning spaceport, that links different worlds. It’s more homage than literal, but it enriches our experience of the Mario world.

Did you see King Kaliente??

In a flashback, we see Bowser Jr’s bedroom, and it is filled with soft toys. But these are no ordinary teddies or bunnies. Bowser Jr’s softies are all down-sized, squishy versions inspired by Mario’s enemies. The super Mario Galaxy boss King Kaliente can do no harm in his current form. Refresh your memory and set your sights on the gaming original, over at The Gamer.

The Red Star gets a glow-up in the movie

It might have had the ability to power-up Mario to grant him flying powers in the game, but there’s a lovely red glowing moment and movement in the film, mirroring the power-up moments in the game.

Did you catch a shooting star?

With the power of Launch Stars Mario can move through space at high speed, travelling to other planets and galaxies. The starry device is used to the same exciting effect in the movie, giving fans of the game a whoosh and burst of nostalgia.
