For those who are keeping count, there have been no fewer than seven Resident Evil films, the most recent of which was a reboot which tried to refocus the franchise to be closer in style to the incredible series of video games that inspired it. Well, hold on your seats because Resident Evil is set for another reboot except this time it has Zach Cregger, the mastermind behind Barbarian and Weapons, at the helm.
Anyone who has seen Cregger’s previous films will know that he is one of the defining voices in horror right now, and so fans are eager to see how his unique approach to the genre might be applied to the world of Resident Evil, which is already known for delivering some of the biggest scares in gaming.

What is the plot of Resident Evil?
When medical courier Bryan agrees to take on one last job for the evening, delivering a package to Raccoon City, he has no idea that he’s stepping into a nightmare of unimaginable proportions. Before long, Bryan is faced with the terrifying reality that the dead have come back to life, and without any clear sign of cavalry coming to save him, it’s up to him to fight through the night and survive until morning.
Who is in the Resident Evil cast?
What’s surprising about the cast list for Resident Evil is that, compared to most films, it’s fairly sparse. This could be intentional as a means of keeping a few secrets under wraps before the film comes out, but then again there are plenty of great horror films like 10 Cloverfield Lane and The Lighthouse, which have shown that having a smaller set of actors can actually amp up the tension. Still, here’s the cast list for Resident Evil as we currently know it to be:

Resident Evil is set to release at a Cineworld near you on Friday, 18th September.
Will the Resident Evil reboot be connected to the games?
For a lot of the Resident Evil fanbase, there’s always been the hope that a film might come along that’s a straight adaptation of one of the games. After all, there’s no shortage of material. You could follow the original Resident Evil and the S.T.A.R.S expedition into the Spencer Mansion, or the many adventures of Leon S. Kennedy, whether that be in Raccoon City or rural Spain. Alternatively, you could opt for one of the more recent games as Resident Evil 7 is itself inspired by a handful of movies including The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. However, Cregger has explicitly stated that his film is an original take on the franchise.
It’s not completely disconnected as the story does take place in Raccoon City during a zombie outbreak, but unlike Resident Evil 2 and 3 which use the same location but in 1998, this film takes place in the present day. The Umbrella Corporation, which is responsible for the T-Virus which turns people into walking corpses, will also feature in the film, suggesting that some of the lore will be carried over.
Resident Evil will have a few easter eggs for eagle-eyed fans
Although the Resident Evil reboot will largely be charting its own path from the games, that doesn’t mean that there won’t be plenty of easter eggs to appeal to longtime fans, and you can see as much from the trailer.
The fact that there’s a typewriter in the house is a nice little nod to the save points which have appeared in almost all of the mainline entries, including the most recent addition, Resident Evil Requiem. Similarly, the shotgun shells that Bryan finds in the drawer have the same design as the ones featured in Resident Evil 4.
