“In each of us, there burns the fury of a warrior. In every generation, a few are chosen to prove it.” So the voiceover to the Mortal Kombat trailer goes. And we can’t speak for anything else, but the fury definitely burned when the news hit that Mortal Kombat the movie would be Johnny Cageless. But with promises that Mortal Kombat II is a big enough film to accommodate that big, beefy personality, you can lower your defences, team MK.
Yes, Mortal Kombat felt weird without Johnny Cage, but there was plenty to make up for it. The first film delivered intense fight scenes, graphic violence and gore with a capital G. It was fun, visually accurate, and the sets and combat armour were pretty awesome.
Feel like reliving the intensity of MK? Switch into battle mode and revisit your favourite scenes from the movie as a reminder of their awesomeness. Then you can appreciate the action of MK II with a renewed sense of vigour. Prepare for fights to the death and barbaric threat. The clue’s in the name, right? This is combat, at its most mortal. The opening massacre is both brutal and high-stakes
Hanzo and his loving family set the scene for an emotional opener. Everything is gentle and harmonious: his son dotes on his baby sister, Hanzo is devoted to his wife. It’s a picturesque, idyllic beginning – peaceful, flower-filled, almost too calm. Hanzo heads to collect water, while mother and son comfort the baby.
And then it’s all ripped away in one fell swoop. Sub-Zero arrives, intent on wiping out an entire bloodline. Such brutality means only one thing, it’s got to be vengeance. This act is so violent, it sets deadly combat in motion, alongside monstrous transformations to come. And as fans, we’re pulled out of that calm world and dropped straight into a bloody, gruesome quest.
Liu Kang versus Reptile – and guess who wins
Liu Kang’s meant to be the hero, but we haven’t seen much proof of that up to this point. It’s almost like he’s too caught up in the past to fight with the focus he needs. But walking through Outworld, something shifts, he’s looking forward now. He spots the almost invisible, shape-shifting creature in the wall and doesn’t hesitate, dragging it out into the open.
The stakes are higher now because we’ve moved from organised fights to raw one-on-one combat. Every strike ramps things up: speed, physicality, aggression.
The creature morphs into Reptile, and the fight is on. There are martial arts kicks, wrestling moves, flying jumps and brutal hits to Liu Kang’s chest. Power shifts between them as they go, until Liu finally comes out on top and Reptile collapses into a skeletal husk. A beat, then writhing creatures emerge from the skeleton, threatening something worse. Liu Kang raises his foot and with one stomp, it’s finished. He is a hero, after all.
Jax loses his arms to Sub-Zero
This is not a fair fight, and that’s what makes it hurt. Jax is all muscle and power, a proper force, and he throws everything he’s got at Sub-Zero. But it’s not enough.
Sub-Zero is cold in every sense: calculated, effortless, vicious. He barely seems to be trying. Twisting kicks land clean. He handles Jax with a kind of icy contempt. And then comes the moment you can’t look away from: he locks Jax’s arms in a vice-like grip, freezing them solid. Jax fights to break free, but he can’t and his arms shatter.
One final, almost casual push and he’s down. Just like that. Not all heroes make it out, and even the strongest aren’t untouchable.
“You’re no Harry Potter, mate” – Liu Kang faces off against Kano
Kano struts in, all attitude and cheek, mouthing off as Liu Kang squares up, focused and ready. This should be serious. But Kano can’t help himself and keeps talking, keeps on pushing. And then, he’s down.
He tries to get the upper hand, but it doesn’t land. “Is that the only move you know?” Well… it works, doesn’t it? Liu Kang doesn’t rise to the bait, or get pulled in. He lets the fighting do the talking. And that’s the point, really. Kano’s all noise. Liu Kang’s all action.
Scorpion vs Sub-Zero: fire vs ice
Cole’s trying to save his family, but Sub-Zero has other plans. He’s relentless, cold and methodical, closing in with no intention of stopping. Then comes the turnaround. Hanzo returns, reborn as Scorpion, rising from hell with one goal: find the ice man.
And when they finally meet, it’s exactly what it should be – fire versus ice, heat against cold, vengeance meeting the thing that started it all. Scorpion doesn’t hold back and every strike is loaded with purpose. And the payoff delivers Hanzo uses the flames of hell to finish Sub-Zero, burning through that icy calm and bringing everything full circle.
