Aardman Animations and Pokémon are working together to bring us a stop-motion animation, Pokémon Tales: The Misadventures of Sirfetch'd & Pichu. Name a better duo, we'll wait. Revealing a first look at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, the Director of Original Animation at The Pokémon Company International, Phil Rynda, spoke at the Aardman Animation's panel about the new project, and we couldn't be more excited.
Not only is it the prospect of another exciting video game adaption – one we've not had from Pokémon since Detective Pikachu back in 2019 – but also the National Treasure status of Aardman Animations automatically puts this high on our radar. It's a British thing, right?
Details about Pokémon Tales: The Misadventures of Sirfetch'd & Pichu are fairly slim on the ground, but we'll endeavour to update our guide as we learn more about this exciting collaboration. First things first, you can take a look at the first look of the characters below.

What is Pokémon Tales: The Misadventures of Sirfetch'd & Pichu about?
Along with the reveal of the first look at the characters, an official synopsis was also given for Pokémon Tales: The Misadventures of Sirfetch'd & Pichu. Set in the wilds of Galar, the film will follow its heroes on a quest to protect the Pokémon of its region. As expected, nothing goes according to plan, but their determination carries them through and a beautiful friendship between Sirfetch'd and Pichu forms. "Peril, alliances, rivalries, extraordinary Pokémon, and endless laughs await them."
When will Pokémon Tales: The Misadventures of Sirfetch'd & Pichu be released?
While an official release date has not been set, the Director of Original Animation at The Pokémon Company International, Phil Rynda, mentioned Pokémon Tales: The Misadventures of Sirfetch'd & Pichu will arrive in 2027, where we can then fall ino love with these two heroes.
What is the region of Galar?
First introduced in the Nintendo Switch game Pokémon Sword and Shield, Galar holds similarities to the United Kingdom. Really, then, there isn't a better collaborator for Pokémon than Aardman, about to celebrate its 50th Anniversary and based in Bristol in the South West of England.
What kind of animation will be used in Pokémon Tales: The Misadventures of Sirfetch'd & Pichu?
Famed for using stop motion and clay animation, many will be intrigued to know how Aardman Animations will help to bring the Pokémon world of Galar to life, with most previous Pokémon on-screen projects primarily produced through 2D hand-drawn animation.
Speaking at the Aardman's "Lights, Camera, Aardman!" panel at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, Chief Creative Director at Aardman, Sarah Cox, said, "Aardman are delighted to bring the vivid physicality of Stop Frame animation into the Pokémon world. Director Tom Parkinson and team have created a hand-crafted spin on the wonderful Pokémon we all know and love with comedic storytelling that celebrates the quirks, eccentricities and charms of our heroes as they explore Galar on a delightfully offbeat quest."
Whether it ends up adopting some of that charm we've seen in its own projects like Wallace & Gromit, or introduces some different elements, we know this is going to be a charming adventure all the same, and we can't wait to see how it translate onto the screen.
