When the August bank holiday comes round, we have mixed feelings. It’s a 3-day weekend, which makes us happy and a little sad too because it’s the last bank holiday until Christmas. See? It’s bittersweet. So let’s cheer ourselves up with the thought of all the wonderful worlds we can immerse ourselves in at Cineworld. Because a 3-day weekend definitely means there’s time to fit in a film (or three).
It’s a weekend when (mostly) friends and family are off work too, and you can have a jolly together (or not, depending on how you’re feeling). But either way, we’ve got a great line-up of films ahead. Movies kids will love, adventures to take the whole family on, and great films for adults, too. Whether you’re going to the cinema solo, in a twosome or with a gang, there’s lots to lose yourself in this weekend.
What could possibly go wrong?
When normal life goes completely off the rails, that’s okay – as long as it’s someone else’s life and you’re watching it on the big screen, that is. There’s a clutch of new releases out at the moment about ordinary people facing extraordinary circumstances, so plenty of catharsis and edge-of-your-seat-how-can-they-possibly-survive-against-these-odds style of entertainment.
The films we have to thank for this? The Dog Stars is Ridley Scott’s post-apocalyptic ride into a viral-laden world where dangerous scavengers roam. The End of Oak Street is an altogether more cosmic spin, from suburbia to prehistoric times (!) but will this brittle family come together and pull through?

To a lesser (and more fun) extent, the characters in One Night Only are also thrust into a strange situation. It’s set in New York, where premarital sex is illegal – all but one night a year. We almost don’t need to say anything else. But we will. Sexy chaos ensues and a will-they-or-won’t-they love story blooms. Makes a great date night movie. Though maybe not for the first date, eh.
Big heroes, big laughs, big adventures
You know that cosy warm feeling when you know you’re going to see good friends you haven’t seen in a while? There’s a raft of films out filled with the film folk we know and love, and it’s so lovely of our favourite characters to join us for the long weekend.
Not least, Woody, Jessie and the gang are back with a fresh adventure in Toy Story 5, so you know the kids will be alright; even if you’ve already seen it, you know it’s worthy of a second outing.
Still in the world of CGI, the Minions are back, so get ready for giggles. Minions & Monsters sees the pint-sized pranksters behind the camera as filmmakers, creating a monster hit of their own…
