Deni Villeneuve centres Chani’s betrayal in Dune: Part Three – and other key moments from the trailer

Since the teaser trailer dropped back in March, we’ve been patiently waiting for a full trailer for Dune: Part Three, billed as the “epic conclusion” to the Frank Herbet book to screen adaptation. And Deni Villeneuve certainly hasn’t disappointed with this first trailer cut.

From drawing out character plotlines not given the airtime in the original story, to getting more of a taste of new characters joining the franchise for Dune: Part Three, here are all the book differences we’ve noticed, and other takeaways from our first full length trailer.

The Dune books do expand beyond Dune Messiah

Deni Villeneuve’s Dune trilogy is just that: a trilogy, though the last film is said to be based on the events of the second book, Dune Messiah. Some creative liberties will therefore have to be taken to wrap up Paul’s character arch. That, or we may see plots from the third book, Children of Dune, squeezed into the finale.

Acting powerhouse Zendaya will be play a bigger role in Part Three

Chani doesn’t have a huge presence in the book canon. However, if the trailer is anything to go by, we’re going to be seeing a lot of Zendaya in Part Three – a sensible choice given she is one of the greatest actresses of her generation.

It makes sense, too, since she was left in the dust following events of the second Dune movie, in which Paul enters a political marriage with Princess Irulan (played by Florence Pugh) – a plot point that didn’t take place in the book.

Talking about Dune: Part Three, Timothée Chalamet said, “I think, without giving too much away, in the third film it’s sort of Denis’ mastery and weaving in storylines that weren’t explicit in the book, and perhaps where, I would say, Denis took the most creative liberty. But it really ties the story together, and Zendaya, as you guys see in that trailer, gives such a fantastic performance in this, as usual.”

In fact, all signs point to Chani being involved in the coup set to overthrow Paul, which brings us on to Robert Pattinson’s character.

Robert Pattinson plays Scytale who plots to dethrone Paul

We were all absolutely obsessed with Robert Pattinson’s bleach blonde buzz cut in the teaser trailer, and now we’ve got a bit more incite into his character, Scytale, a Tleilaxu Face Dancer.

We see in the trailer as he plots, alongside Princess Irulan, to get Paul off the throne. In the trailer, Scytale tells Irulan he has found someone, with the next shot featuring Chani. Oh, it is on!

Jason Momoa’s Duncan Idaho returns – or does he?

Is Duncan Idaho alive? We see him die while fighting against the Emperor’s Sardaukar in the first film – and yet here is Momoa in the trailer for Part Three. But it’s not Duncan Idaho. Jason Momoa’s character is Haty, a ghola reanimated flesh grown from Idaho’s dead body.

They’re created by the Tleilaxu (remember Pattinson’s character), and it seems Hayt is a part of the plot against Paul, perhaps hoping to destabilise him with a familiar face.

Denis Villeneuve has said Dune: Part Three will feel different

Not one to sit on his laurels, Villeneuve has said he wanted to do something different with the conclusion to the trilogy, describing it as a thriller.

In a Q&A event, the director said, “It’s a more intense story. And it’s definitely more emotional as well.”
