Zendaya and Samantha Morton reflect on working with Christopher Nolan for the first time: “He’s really with you on that journey, on that odyssey”

Christopher Nolan’s latest epic is arriving at Cineworld screens on 17th July. We got the opportunity to sit down with two of its stars, Zendaya and Samantha Morton, and talk about what it was like to work on The Odyssey with the award-winning director.

Zendaya and Samantha Morton are just two of The Odyssey’s stacked cast, playing iconic mythological characters Athena and Circe, who Matt Damon’s Odysseus meets on his long journey home following the Trojan War. Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, and Elliot Page are just a few other big names starring in The Odyssey.

Speaking to Cineworld, Zendaya and Samantha Morton described what it was like to work with Christopher Nolan, noting his immersive approach to filmmaking.

“He directs and stays so much in the scene with you,” Zendaya told us. “Him being, like, right behind the camera and right there, and so locked in with his actors, I think, was a unique experience. I don’t think I’ve had a director be that close and that tangible before in a scene.”

Samantha Morton agreed with her co-star. “It’s like he’s really with you on that journey, on that odyssey, with you.

“I found that he wouldn’t ask you to do something he wouldn’t do himself, and I can’t give too much away in that context, but it was amazing to be a part of.”

Commenting on if she had any preconceived ideas of what it would be like to work with Nolan, Morton added, “It wasn’t that I was surprised, because I didn’t have any expectations other than I knew it was going to be phenomenal, because I’m the biggest fan of everything he’s done. So, you know, it was an honour. I was more intrigued and curious.”
