Free Willy and all the other classic movies in production for a reboot or sequel

Ever tried to introduce your kids to a film you loved as a child, then hesitated because you can’t find your VHS tape don’t think they’d get it? The last thing you want is for them to be unfussed about a film you’ve loved since you were knee-high.

Take Free Willy. Released in 1993, the film has undergone significant changes in quality since then – in CGI, print, sound, visuals, and more. And if kids today can’t get past the look of it to the heart of the story of your favourite film ever, then that’s gonna hurt.

Which is why you’ll be standing to attention like a cute meerkat when you hear there’s to be a reboot of Free Willy. Luckily for us, there’s a real trend for remakes of some of our best-loved films. So we can watch them anew and love them all over again – it’ll be like you’re watching for the first time.

Masters of the Universe

Sitting cross-legged on the floor watching those animated muscles on the TV, we bet you never dreamed you’d one day see a live-action remake. In 2026, Nicholas Galitzine is He-Man. He returns to Eternia in an epic adventure, teaming up with his allies to save his family and home. The cast includes Jared Leto and Idris Elba in this fantasy-and-sorcery story.

Moana live action

Epic and uplifting, it was only a matter of time before every child’s dream story became a live-action remake. And for the human version to feature The Rock after all is a brilliant coup. Watch the Disney sea adventure and Polynesian island tale in cinemas – it’s sure to bring a whole new ship full of little ‘uns with it.

Upcoming screenings of your favourite films reboot

Practical Magic 2

Set nearly a quarter of a century after the first Practical Magic, the original cast reprise their roles in a story involving the next generation: Sally’s daughter, Kylie. Kylie (played by Joey King) discovers family secrets and her own style of magic, while the two sisters, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, unite to break the curse on their family.

 

 

Sense and Sensibility (25 September)

The latest rendition of the classic Regency story features younger actors who are closer in age to how Jane Austen intended. The bond between sisters Elinor and Marianne, played by Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esme Creed-Miles, is at the heart of the story which centres on love and heartbreak.

 

 

The Social Reckoning (9 October)

Aaron Sorkin puts finger to keyboard again for The Social Reckoning, a sequel to The Social Network. Plenty has happened to Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook since the end of the last film, and the story moves forward from there. Replacing Jesse Eisenberg as Zuckerberg is Jeremy Strong, and Mikey Madison and Jeremy Allen White also join the cast.

 

 

The Cat in the Hat animation (6 November)

We’ve had the live-action film based on the classic bedtime story The Cat in the Hat, and now we have an animated remake with Bill Hader voicing the cat in the magical red-and-white-striped hat. He sets out trying to cheer up sister and brother, Gabby and Sebastian, who have just moved to a new town. Xochitl Gomez voices Gabby (Sally in the book), and Tiago Martinez voices Sebastian.

 

Jumanji: Open World (25 December)

The fifth and final episode of Jumanji is scheduled for release at the end of the year. It’s nine years since Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and seven since The Next Level. The third Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan film returns, and the story is rumoured to be about the game leaking into the real world.
