How does IMAX work?
IMAX combines specific high-resolution cameras with state-of-the-art projectors and a uniquely optimised auditorium to put you at the heart of the action.
IMAX possesses a unique aspect ratio (1.90:1 versus anamorphic widescreen's 2.39:1) that expands the cinematic environment. This is further enhanced by a pin-sharp remastering process and dual projection, which cumulatively imbues greater levels of warmth and sharpness into the picture. Add to this perfectly tuned and integrated surround sound, and IMAX offers a truly visceral experience.
The IMAX remastering process helps ensure every frame glistens with added levels of contrast and sharpness. This lends greater veracity and depth to every scene. The nature of the projection feels crystal clear and unlike anything seen in a standard widescreen presentation, transforming every frame of a film to produce the best possible version of a filmmaker’s vision.
IMAX auditoriums are also equipped with a perfectly tuned integrated sound and speaker system for heart-pounding audio that will truly blow you away. Speakers are placed in specific areas around the auditorium to deliver unparalleled preciseness that enhances the level of immersion. The frequency response of IMAX audio also enhances both higher notes and bass levels, meaning you can practically feel the impact of the sound from your seat.
You can also opt for IMAX with Laser at selected Cineworld cinemas. IMAX with Laser furnishes audiences with the brightest, sharpest, most vivid digital images you can imagine. Its groundbreaking, next-generation 4K laser projection, in combination with a 12-channel sound system, takes you into the world of the biggest blockbusters.
IMAX with Laser is currently available at Cineworld Ashford, Cineworld Barnsley, Cineworld Belfast, Cineworld Glasgow Silverburn, Cineworld Leicester Square, Cineworld Rushden Lakes, Cineworld Sheffield, Cineworld Watford and Cineworld York.

Why is Oppenheimer meant to be experienced in IMAX?
Christopher Nolan's Oscar-winning epic Oppenheimer was designed with the IMAX experience in mind. The fiery thriller explores the spectacular and chilling birth of atomic warfare and was captured with IMAX cameras, amongst the highest-resolution film cameras in the world.
Nolan and his regular cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema, another of the film's Oscar winners, shot Oppenheimer on a combination of IMAX 65mm and 65mm large-format film. This includes, for the first time, sections captured in IMAX black and white analog photography that alternate with colour visuals throughout the drama.
Nolan has done more to propagate the scale and wonder of IMAX than most other modern-day directors. He started by filming specific sequences in the IMAX format (beginning in 2008 with The Dark Knight's opening bank robbery scene) and then ambitiously progressed to lensing entire movies with IMAX cameras.
The likes of Interstellar and Dunkirk have been distinguished by their level of IMAX expanse. IMAX deploys a unique and massively more expansive aspect ratio enhance the grandiosity of Nolan's vision. This famously includes an aversion to CGI, replaced by a desire to capture everything practically in-camera.
However, don't just take our word for it. In the following video, the UK's leading film critic, Mark Kermode, and Christopher Nolan superfan Jack Howard explain why you need to experience the director's latest opus in the IMAX format.
What are the best Oppenheimer scenes to experience in IMAX?
Truth be told, it's the cumulative impact of Oppenheimer in IMAX that's bound to stick with you. Upon viewing the film from start to finish in IMAX, one can better appreciate the film's narrative intricacy and fearsome technical credentials from Jennifer Lame's sharp editing that cross-cuts along timelines and perspectives to Ludwig Goransson's yearning score that celebrates scientific success while lamenting its eventual horrific application.
However, if we're identifying one specific scene to experience in IMAX, it has to be the Trinity Test. Nolan famously recreated this real-life atomic test, which took place in the desert of Los Alamos with Oppenheimer, his scientific crew and the Army. The sequence's tense build-up is again accentuated by Ludwig Goransson's score, which drops out of the sound mix at the point of the explosion to leave us with an eerie silence that is soon replaced by the piercing blast of the shockwave.
All of these aural signatures gain greater dimension and nuance when experienced in fully integrated IMAX sound. And then you have the visual nature of the scene: a nighttime landscape interrupted by an apocalyptic, fiery blot and the stunned close-ups of the spectators. The sheer canvas of IMAX enhances these bold and wondrous sights, pulling us into the moment when human warfare changed forever.
Hear from Nolan, Hoytema, producer Emma Thomas and others in the following clip that explores the pivotal Trinity Test sequence.
