Nicolas Cage is in reliably eccentric form in the madcap and nightmarish black comedy Dream Scenario. It comes from the makers of Beau is Afraid, which should alert you as to its tone, and lucky Unlimited members got to see Cage's new movie in advance over the weekend.
Cage plays a schlubby college professor who discovers he has the ability to invade people's dreams. Initially, Cage's character Paul exploits the scenario to boost his own celebrity status, but things soon take a darker turn when the dreams become murderous and rage-infested.
It's what we've come to expect from the indie experts at distributor A24, balancing trenchant insight with disturbing moments and mordant humour. Here's a selection of Unlimited responses that should encourage you to make a date with Cage's wild new offering.
i love Cage in this less caricatured mode, but the dream elements allowed him space to kick back and go 'full Cage' alongside his best performance since Pig. i was expecting the end to be weirder, but maybe that's the frustration of dreams not going where you want?

Nic Cage gets his own Being John Malkovich moment in this none-more A24 release. He does a great job in a difficult role. An excellent but strange film.

A strange but compelling film with a terrific understated performance by Cage. Very funny but also disturbing in places, especially the way the dream Paul became more aggressive as the real one got more distressed. Not heard of the director before but hope to see more from him

Sorry Oppenheimer, you've been bumped. THE best film of the year. Unique, inventive, gorgeously shot, hilariously funny with another Cage performance for the ages.

I haven't seen a film like this since Synecdoche, New York, and that's one of my favourite films.
10/10.

What a ride 🙌 brilliant performance, gripping, tense, darkly funny. I wanted more. Didn't dream about him tho 🤣
