Sony is delivering the goods where new whimsical anime feature length movies are concerned. This time it’s in the form of Mamoru Hosoda’s next anime export, Scarlet. Sign us up!
Scarlet is landing at Cineworld on 6th February, the latest from Mamoru Hosoda, who was nominated for his 2018 film Mirai for Best Animated Feature Film, narrowly missing out to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. With both Demon Slayer and Chainsaw Man being hits last year, we think anime fans will love this. Here’s everything you need to know about Scarlet.
What is the plot of the new anime Scarlet?
A story that leaps between eras, it is also one of vengeance and female rage as Scarlet begins a dangerous quest to avenge the death of her father. But when the sword-wielding princess finds herself wounded, in a strange present-day world that is far from the medieval home she knows, the kindness of a stranger helps to heal her and show her a world not ruled by her bottled anger. And when she faces her father’s killer again, she must decided between an old or new way.
Who is in the Scarlet cast?
Scarlet has a full voice cast of Japanese actors and will released with subtitles. Any dubbed screenings are yet to be confirmed. The full Scarlet cast includes:
- Mana Ashida as Scarlet
- Masaki Okada as Hijiri
- Koji Yakusho as Claudius
- Kazuhiro Yamaji as Polonius
- Tokio Emoto as Laertes

When will Scarlet be released in the UK?
Scarlet is due to be released in the cinemas in the UK on 6th February.
Is Scarlet based on Hamlet?
You may be thinking William Shakespeare's Hamlet is everywhere in 2026 – and you'd be right. Between the National Theatre live recording heading to cinemas this year as a part of the Event Cinema line-up, as well as both Hamnet and Hamlet feature length films... Well, we're here to tell you there's another one.
Mamoru Hosoda said Scarlet takes inspiration from Hamlet and is a gender swap of the play. He also said it takes inspiration from Joan of Arc (because what self-respecting, sword-fighting princess doesn't want to channel her inner Joan), as well as other influences including – surprisingly – Dune and Disney's own animated rendition of Hamlet, The Lion King.
