Horror master Robert Eggers isn't resting on his laurels like a vampire in a coffin of Earth. Fresh from Nosferatu, the talented filmmaker has now announced plans for his new movie, Werwulf, and we've got all the details right here.
Is Werwulf going to be Robert Eggers's next movie after Nosferatu?
Robert Eggers is making Werwulf his next movie, having scored a critical and commercial hit with the atmospheric vampire horror Nosferatu. The latter film has become the biggest hit of Eggers's career, grossing more than $150 million worldwide and scoring four Oscar nominations, including one for Jarin Blaschke's arresting monochrome cinematography.
Eggers is said to have completed the script for Werwulf already and the movie is expected to go into production very soon. Eggers wrote Werwulf with noted Icelandic poet Sjón, his collaborator on The Northman (2022).
What is Werwulf about?
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film will be a 'werewolf thriller' set in 13th-century England. The script is said to feature 'dialogue that was true to the period and has translations and annotations for those uninitiated in Old English.' This is familiar territory for Eggers: his breakout film The Witch (2016) drew much of its dialogue from authentic 17th-century sources while the paranoid thriller The Lighthouse (2020) was encrusted in all kinds of salty maritime idioms.
Who is starring in Werwulf?
Unknown at this stage. Eggers has carved out a partnership with Willem Dafoe who appeared in The Lighthouse, The Northman and Nosferatu, so one might expect him to make an appearance. There's a chance that Eggers could reunite with Anya Taylor-Joy who broke out with her performance in The Witch and also appeared in The Northman. (Taylor-Joy was set for the Nosferatu role that ultimately went to Lily-Rose Depp.)
