Ever wanted to leapfrog social niceties, keep it brutally real, and tell someone what you really think? That’s what the play The Misanthrope explores. Written in 1666 by Molière, the National Theatre production brings this classic story right up to date with some delightful flipping.
The original centred on a French aristocrat who doesn’t play nice when he’s not feeling it. Today’s play has the brilliant Sandra Oh in the lead role as Alice, a novelist who has little time for modern social niceties, including society’s hollow ideas of kindness and respect.
Let’s see how that works out for her. The results are hilarious, revealing and entertaining. The more she reveals her true feelings, the more her life starts to fall apart.

Sandra Oh steals the show
All reviews point to the Killing Eve and Grey’s Anatomy star totally commanding the stage and lapping up the limelight. The actor’s a joyous watch on the small screen so to hear that she’s bossing it on the boards is pleasing. It’s little wonder that our favourite Korean-Canadian provokes conflict and laughter in equal measure in this production.

This version is very much about today, with social media and public opinion firmly in the spotlight. As well as the trickeries of being honest and the inevitable backlash that follows.
