Behind the scenes interview: the stars of The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim on their love of Middle-earth

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is unlike any Lord of the Rings movie you've seen before. That's because it's rendered as an anime, which brings a striking new dimension to the story of Rohan leader Helm Hammerhand (voiced by Succession actor Brian Cox). Initially relegated to the appendices of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Return of the King, Helm's story now gets a feature-length airing from noted anime filmmaker Kenji Kamiyama and story writer Philippa Boyens, who was an active part of the live-action, Peter Jackson-led Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Discover how the pivotal fortress known as Helm's Deep got its name as we're introduced to the deadly battle between the forces of Rohan and the Dunlendings. Actor Gaia Wise (Emma Thompson's daughter) voices Helm's tenacious daughter Héra who fights to carve out her own identity within the king's hall while Miranda Otto reprises her role as Eowyn to act as our narrator.

Filled with action as it fills in the gaps in Middle-earth lore, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is bound to be catnip for Tolkien fans. We caught up with both Gaia Wise and fellow actor Laurence Ubong Williams, who voices Fréaláf Hildeson, Helm's nephew and successor to the throne of Rohan, to explore their passion for the enduring Middle-earth mythology.
