Following on from the ridiculously relatable Booksmart, and the divisive, needle-pushing Don’t Worry Darling, Olivia Wilde’s latest directorial project is here. The Invite stars Wilde herself, alongside her star-studded co-stars: Seth Rogen, Penélope Cruz, and Edward Norton.
Arriving at Cineworld 3rd July, here’s everything you need to know about The Invite – with tickets now on sale.
What is the plot of The Invite?
Joe and Angela’s marriage is on the rocks when they invite their neighbours Piña and Hawk over. What transcends is an evening of twists and turns, and unexpected revelations as repressed emotions are brought to the surface.
Sounds intense? Well, it is, married with a small set that Olivia Wilde more than makes the most of. And it’s also incredibly funny, so expect some light relief. That’s according to Unlimited reviews for The Invite, anyway.
Who is in the cast of The Invite?
A cosy cast list for a, at times, suffocating film, The Invite has just four credited roles.
- Seth Rogen as Joe
- Olivia Wilde as Angela
- Penélope Cruz as Pína
- Edward Norton as Hawk
The Invite is actually a remake
If the premise sounds familiar, that’s because The Invite is a remake of Spanish film The People Upstairs, which was released in 2020. It’s based on Cesc Gay’s play Los Vecinos de Arriba.
Before Olivia Wilde signed on, The Invite had a different cast
As is typical in the world of Hollywood, scripts are greenlight and tabled before they see the light of day. That was the same with The Invite, with numerous creatives attached to the project before Olivia Wilde ultimately signed on to direct. And there was a completely different cast to herself, Rogen, Cruz, and Norton.
Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris were set to direct and Amy Adams, Paul Rudd, and Tessa Thompson were cast.
