What is speedflying, you might ask? Allow the following video for Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One to explain. Essentially, it's a combination of base jumping and parachuting, and it's understandably described as one of the most dangerous sports in the world.
Naturally, when you put it in the hands of Mission: Impossible star Tom Cruise, you can expect a pretty spectacular and hair-raising result. Cruise and writer-director Christopher McQuarrie put the practice to the test when they were shooting the movie in the Lake District.
Cruise outlines the ability to travel at 80 km an hour while speedflying, which already gives us the heebie-jeebies, and the footage of the stunt preparation, which has lasted several years, is riveting enough on its own. The most important question is surely this: does Cruise ever find time to sleep? Based on Dead Reckoning - Part One's onslaught of awesome-looking set-pieces and stunts, we reckon not.
It's a typically ambitious collision between sheer bravado and filmmaking acumen as McQuarrie also describes the new camera gimbal that was designed specifically for the sequence. Impossible? The team that makes these movies don't know the meaning of the word.
