Can’t stop ’til we get enough – and Lionsgate has confirmed a Michael Jackson biopic sequel is in the works

Can I get your most enthusiastic “Heehee”?! Because a sequel to the Michael Jackson biopic has officially been confirmed by Lionsgate.

Moonwalking into Cineworld at the end of April, Michael has enchanted audiences, and the ominous words “His Story Continues” right before the credits rolled have left many speculating on whether a follow-up film is in the works. Now Lionsgate has confirmed a sequel is coming, although it may not follow on chronologically from where the film finishes at the opening to Michael’s first solo tour at Wembley Stadium in 1988.

Michael’s own nephew, Jaafar Jackson, plays the King of Pop in the biopic directed by Antoine Fuqua, chronicling Michael’s life as his career began alongside his siblings in the Jackson 5, and how he broke away from his father to discover his own genre-defying sound.

Speaking about the sequel, Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Chair Adam Fogelson said: “Much of the biggest and most popular parts of his music catalogue were not touched upon in the first film. There are so many other events that happened, even in the time frame of the original movie that weren’t touched upon, so we’re very, very confident that we’ve got an incredibly entertaining movie that will appeal once again to a global audience as the pieces come together.”

Given the first film was unable to portray the courses that took place in Michael Jackson’s later life due to a legal settlement, it’s not exactly surprising we may not see much beyond the late 80s.

This makes the Michael sequel an even more interesting premise, with Fogelson adding, “We can go forwards and backwards in telling the story.”
