Ballerina: Is Keanu Reeves in it and everything else you need to know about the John Wicks spin-off

Did you think you’d seen the last of John Wick? The fifth film in the franchise does things a little differently, with the spin-off, Ballerina, set for release on June 6th. Directed by Len Wiseman and written by Shay Hatten who previously worked on John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and John Wick: Chapter 4, Ava de Armas takes on this title’s protagonist out for revenge. And, no judgement, but it’s not just about a dead dog this time.

Take a look at what’s in store in this fresh take on the John Wick movies in the trailer below, and read on as we share everything we know about Ballerina so far.

Who is in the cast of Ballerine, the John Wick spin-off?

Ana de Armas – known for her roles in Blade Runner 2049, Knives Out, and No Time to Die – plays our leading lady, Eve Macarro in Ballerina. She’s the feisty ballerina turning her pointed toes from pirouettes to uppercuts, while Anjelica Huston reprises her role as the Director of the Ruska Rome crime syndication (though her face still haunts us from the 1990 adaptation of The Witches…) Other familiar faces return, including Lance Reddick in his final posthumous performance, with the full cast and character list below.

  • Ana de Armas as Eve Macarro
  • Anjelica Huston as Director
  • Gabriel Byrne as Chancellor
  • Lance Reddick as Charon
  • Ian McShane as Winston Scott
  • Norman Reedus as Daniel Pine
  • Keanu Reeves as John Wick

Is Keanu Reeves going to be in Ballerina?

Well, we may have jumped the gun a bit with that cast list, but yes, Keanu Reeves is set to star in Ballerina, though the extent to which he stars as titular character John Wicks isn’t likely to be revealed until the film’s release itself. Still, anyone gunning for more than a cameo is likely to be disappointed.

While promoting his documentary Wick is Pain at its screening in Santa Monica, he revealed he spent only eight days on the set of Ballerina, noting that “It was really cool to have a chance to put the suit on” and work with “wonderful artist” de Armas.

Ava de Armas and Keanue Reeves have some killer fight scenes

Don’t worry, even if Reeves’ screentime ends up being short-lived, it sounds like it’ll at least be action-packed. Talking about bringing him on board for the project, de Armas said, “I didn’t think he was gonna throw me on the floor this many times!”

Is there going to be a sequel to Ballerina?

The film might not be out yet, but there are already murmurings from the stars themselves of a follow-up to Ballerina, with de Armas telling Empire Magazine Reeves was sharing ideas with Len Wiseman for a potential follow-up.

While the ending of John Wick: Chapter 4 may have had fans questioning the continual success of the franchise (if you know, you know), the introduction of Eve Macarro could just breathe life into the series yet. No surprises here. Who doesn’t love butt-kicking ballerinas?

While not confirmed, de Armas’ character is new to the underworld and could have many years of being an assassin in her. Add that to the roster of films already confirmed for the franchise, including John Wick 5, fans certainly won’t be going hungry.
