What if your favourite spooky tales sprang to life and made your existence a living hell? That's the ghoulishly entertaining premise of new horror movie Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, which screens in advance for Cineworld Unlimited members on 20th August.
The Shape of Water director Guillermo del Toro presents this adaptation of Alvin Schwartz's book series. These spine-tingling tales of terror, inspired by classic folk tales and urban legends, were intended to introduce such material to a children's audience. Accompanied by evocative illustrations from Stephen Gammell, Schwartz's work has often been the cause of controversy Stateside as to its appropriateness.
The movie is set in 1968 and revolves around a mysterious tome whose inky horrors spring to life whenever one reads it. Hovering in the background is the tormented spirit of Sarah Bellows, who wrote the book and unleashes vengeance through the pages. When a group of teens break into Sarah's dilapidated house and read from the text, they unleash all manner of foul fiends, including Harold the Scarecrow and the dreaded Jangly Man...
