Any sense of disappointment that Spider-Man: Brand New Day isn’t being shown in IMAX is blown out of the water by the news that just broke. For the first time in cinema history, the latest Spidey film has been shot for SCREENX. That’s big news, and we love that the creators kept it under wraps for so long.
So what does it mean for us? Basically, it means you’re going to get more Spider-Verse for your buck.

Just what is SCREENX exactly?
We’re long used to the joys of surround sound and the rich enhancement it brings; well, think of SCREENX as surround cinema.
SCREENX is a multi-projection cinema format in which certain scenes in a film extend beyond the cinema screen, flowing onto the side walls. What does this do for us? It widens our view of the movie into a panoramic experience and pulls us into the very heart of the story.
In short, it’s totally awesome, and we can’t think of a better film for SCREENX technology than a Spider-Man movie.
What’s more, instead of the expanded visuals being optimised digitally in post-production, the visuals for this latest Spider-Man instalment have been specially shot and creatively curated. This gives film lovers a genuinely first-of-its-kind experience.
In a world first, special cameras rolled onto set to shoot extra footage for SCREENX
So rather than being an add-on in post, shooting extra footage for the SCREENX experience of Spider-Man: Brand New Day was an integral part of the production process, making the end result totally authentic.
For the first time ever, two creative teams came together to create bold visuals and a cinema experience that will blow your mind. SCREENX specialists worked alongside film set crews, adding extra cameras to capture carefully curated footage. This means we get to see a 270-degree panoramic vision of seamless quality.

Never been to a SCREENX screening before? Can’t imagine what extra visuals on the side walls will look like? It’s pretty cool. The effects are wild. Get a sneaky look here. Mind blown.
Pretty cool, huh? It’s a wraparound immersive experience, where the streets of New York literally open up before your eyes, and you’re pulled right into the heart of the film.
It’s like the world is stretching and opening out even more, so it’ll feel as though you’re being swallowed up by the action.
The specific scenes were filmed in much the same way as filming for IMAX
Jun Bang, head of the company that brings the SCREENX technology, CJ 4DPLEX, tells PR Newswire: “By utilising our proprietary SCREENX production tools and presentation technology, we are able to expand the film's visual canvas while preserving the director's creative vision.”
By working closely with director Destin Daniel Crettin and production company Sony Pictures, they shot footage that aligns with Crettin’s vision. It extends the director’s vision for the film, offering an authentic, seamless experience.
As Crettin says, “This is a first. It’s something truly unique that nobody has experienced before – you’re going to love it."
