Teen sensation turned fully-fledged star Joseph Gordon-Levitt is calling all the shots on his feature-length directorial debut Don Jon, out in Cineworld on 15 November.
As well as cutting his teeth behind the camera, he also writes and takes the lead role as Jon – dubbed ‘Don’ by his friends due to his skills in attracting the opposite sex. However, Jon is also addicted to porn – which somewhat clouds his expectations of real-life intimacy!
So when Jon begins a relationship with the vivacious Barbara (Scarlett Johansson), he must ask himself whether it’s sex or a soulmate he’s after.
“I wanted to tell a story about love,” says Gordon-Levitt. “And what gets in the way of love is people objectfying each other. Boys do it to girls and girls do it to boys.”
In spite of the fillm’s thorny subject matter, Don Jon is driven by the sassy chemistry between its stars. Gordon-Levitt says that although the film makes serious points, it’s also a great deal of fun. “The comedy comes from the fact you know people like this,” he explains, “and it reminds you of life and makes you laugh.”
Don Jon is released on 15 November.
