A new Ghostbusters: Afterlife has materialised and it's awesome

We've exactly one month to go until Ghostbusters: Afterlife arrives in Cineworld cinemas. Director Jason Reitman fashions a direct continuation of his father Ivan's classic Ghostbusters movies from the 1980s. Only this time, there's a bit of a twist, as a younger generation grapples with the Ghostbusters legacy to save their small town from supernatural annihilation. Here's what we learned from the new international trailer for Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

1. Egon will physically appear in the movie

Egon actor (and original Ghostbusters writer) Harold Ramis passed away in February 2014, so unless Ghostbusters: Afterlife has sought a decent lookalike (let's hope not), we imagine that Egon will be evoked in distant shots and profile shots. This new trailer indicates that we'll glimpse Egon's activities on the mysterious family farm, with an ominous sign marked, 'This is the end.'

2. Gozer is definitely coming back...

We already knew this, but the new trailer gives us a clear glimpse of that distinctive flattop and leering visage. Can we surmise that Egon sought to dispose of his old supernatural nemesis out in the sticks? If so, it's a tad unfortunate that his grandkids, Phoebe (Mackenna Grace) and Trevor (Finn Wolfhard) are tenacious and resourceful in digging out his old Ghostbusters legacy. Yes, this includes the old Ecto-1 car, unceremoniously hidden beneath a dust sheet in a barn. Time to fire up the roof...

3. ... As are the terror dogs

Again, we knew this, but it's enjoyably chilling to see those malevolent hell-hounds front and centre in the new Afterlife trailer. They were always the scariest thing about the 1984 Ghostbusters movie, particularly the scenes involving Dana Barrett (Sigourney Weaver) being terrorised in her Manhattan apartment. Can we expect the same level of scary in the new movie?

4. Muncher is the new Slimer

Nope, this isn't the infamous green blob who slimed Pete Venkman (Bill Murray) in one of the original movie's most famous sequences. (The blueish hue should surely give that away.) This specter is named Muncher, and he puts Phoebe and Trevor to work as they roar around their new town in Ecto-1 attempting to track him down.

Talking of Bill Murray, he's set to cameo in the movie, along with Weaver, Dan Aykroyd (whom we heard in the previous trailer). Ernie Hudson and Annie Potts (whose character Janine also appeared in the previous trailer).

5. There's a clear callback to a chase sequence from the original movie

Remember in the first film when the hapless Louis Tully (Rick Moranis) was pursued by one of the terror dogs before finally being possessed? We're getting strong vibes of that in the trailer sequence where Paul Rudd's teacher Mr. Grooberson is pursued through the supermarket by one of the demons. Here's hoping he isn't taken over by any paranormal activity.
