After the success of The Batman (2022), all eyes are on the highly anticipated sequel.
With anticipation continuing to build for the next chapter in Gotham, fans are eagerly speculating about what lies ahead for the Caped Crusader. Following the success of The Batman and the expanding world introduced in The Penguin, attention has firmly shifted toward the future of the franchise and where Bruce Wayne’s story will go next.
Amid an exciting new casting announcement for the next instalment, here’s everything we know so far about The Batman 2, including the plot, casting and release date.
What is the plot of The Batman 2?
Matt Reeves is confirmed to return to direct and co-write the sequel, though he’s keeping most plot details under wraps. What Reeves has teased, however, is that the plot of The Batman Part II will place a greater focus on Bruce Wayne alongside Batman’s detective work.
The story is also expected to explore the fallout from the events of The Batman and The Penguin, diving deeper into Gotham’s corruption and growing instability.
Who is in the cast of The Batman 2?
Matt Reeves has confirmed a major expansion to the cast of The Batman Part II, with Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Brian Tyree Henry, Charles Dance, Sebastian Koch, and Gil Perez-Abraham all joining the film. They’ll appear alongside returning cast members Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne, Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Colin Farrell as the Penguin, and Jayme Lawson as Mayor Bella Reál. Gil Perez-Abraham also returns as GCPD Officer Martinez, while Barry Keoghan is expected to reprise his role as the Joker.
With such a stacked ensemble, The Batman Part II is shaping up to be one of Gotham’s most ambitious chapters yet.
Who will be the villain in The Batman 2?
While The Joker is expected to return to the big screen, he won’t be the only villain causing chaos in Gotham. Reports suggest that Stan has been cast as Harvey Dent’s twisted alter ego, Two-Face, alongside Johansson as Harvey’s wife, Gilda Dent, and Dance as his father, Charles Dent.
Johansson is no stranger to the superhero genre, having first appeared as Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, in Marvel’s Iron Man 2 (2010).
Why has The Batman 2 been delayed?
Principal photography was meant to commence in November 2023 but was pushed back amid writer strikes in Hollywood. In February 2025, Pattinson told reporters that shooting would begin at the end of that year, but the production was hit with further delays.
In May 2026, Reeves revealed that they were finally back on set with a couple of teaser photos showing the Batmobile driving through snow. Reports suggested filing would take place at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden and Liverpool in England, as well as in Glasgow.

What is the release date for The Batman 2?
After originally securing a theatrical release date of 2nd October 2026, The Batman 2 was pushed back a full year to 1st October 2027, to allow more time. The new Alejandro González Iñárritu and Tom Cruise movie, Digger, how now scooped up that 2026 calendar date instead.
Has the title of The Batman 2 changed?
Back in 2023, the project was being referred to as The Batman: Part 2, but that naming was reportedly dropped the following year. An official title has yet to be revealed, though it’s worth noting that previous entries in the franchise have typically avoided numbered sequels altogether. Films such as Batman Returns (1992), Batman Forever (1995), Batman & Robin (1997), and The Dark Knight (2008) all followed standalone naming conventions rather than using a numbered format.
Who else has played The Batman before?
Pattinson is one of many stars who played Batman on-screen over the years. More than a dozen actors have donned the bat suit over the years. First being Lewis Wilson all the way back in 1943, and most famously, Christian Bale played Batman in Christopher Nolan’s gritty trilogy of films (2005–2012).
Other notable names for the live-action films include Robert Lowery (1949), Adam West (1966–1968), Michael Keaton (1989), Kevin Conroy (1992–2001), Val Kilmer (1995), George Clooney (1997) and Ben Affleck (2016–2023).
