Let’s face it, you’re going to hear a lot about the big blockbuster movies of the year, and while you definitely need to get your tickets to the likes of Supergirl and The Odyssey, there are some sleeper hits making a buzz that are also worth your time.
With Tuner, starring Leo Woodall and Dustin Hoffman, getting a wider release from this weekend at Cineworld, people have also been praising Hugh Jackman’s The Sheep Detective. Two lesser talked about films, sure. But people are loving them. And don’t you wanna have your fingers on the pulse and have some more left field movie recommendations up your sleeve?
If you’re a horror fan, Obsession is also making waves as a small budget film with YouTube creator beginnings.
New movies not to be missed
The Sheep Detective (screening now)
The premise sounds…unusual to say the least. A shepherd, George (Hugh Jackman), has a penchant for murder mysteries and is often found reading them to his sheep. Little does he know they understand every word, and when George is found dead under suspicious circumstances, the herd resolve to solve the crime. Many kept their expectations pretty slow for this one, and were left absolutely delighted and heartened by this silly farmyard jaunt.

Finding Emily (screening now)
Want something swoony and funny that’ll make you feel a bit youthful? Finding Emily is the latest romantic comedy to hit our screens as sound tech Owen meets a girl called Emily on a night out and they hit it off. Failing to get the full digits of her number, he goes on a quest to contact every Emily at the university. As you’d expect, it has all the awkwardness and pure hearted whimsy from a romance taking place at a British university. And the needle drops on this soundtrack are just so great.
Obsession (screening now)
YouTube horrors are having a moment right now, and none are more worthy than Obsession, which is equally enthralling and disturbing audiences. The sign of a good horror movie, methinks. Better still, its popularity is a win for low-budget horror movies, and captures the realities of a socially anxious generation who will go to any length to have its debilitating crush realised.
Tuner (screening now)
Dustin Hoffman and Leo Woodall join forces in this intriguing crime thriller in which a former musician (Woodall) utilises his condition, hyperacusis, to help crack safes alongside piano tuner Harry Horowitz. Tuner has largely floated under the radar, but now it’s making soundwaves, with the likes of The Times citing it as Woodall’s best performance yet, while The Guardian described Hoffman and Woodall’s duo as a “sweet harmony”.
The new releases Cineworld predicts to be sleeper hits
Rosebush Pruning (10th July)
Recently wedded star Callum Turner stars in this satirical black comedy, Rosebush Pruning, centring a rich but bizarre family who revel in unhinged, debauchery behaviour. Having recently moved from NYC to Catalonia following the death of the matriarch – who was ripped apart by wolves – Rosebush Pruning has a stellar cast including riley Keough, Elle Fanning, Lukas George, and Pamela Anderson.
