“Being in this film, it’s the most life-changing experience” Joseph Zada talks about becoming Haymitch in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping BTS

Joseph Zada will portray Haymitch Abernathy come the end of November and, in turn, attempt to fill the shoes of one Woody Harrelson who played the iconic The Hunger Games character in the first three films. In a new behind the scenes featurette from Lionsgate, Zada talks about becoming Haymitch and his experience joining the beloved franchise.

Arriving in Cineworld on 20th November, Zada will play Haymitch in The Sunrise on the Reaping, a prequel to the original Hunger Games trilogy, which charts Haymitch’s own experience in his own Hunger Games, the 50th edition also known as the Second Quarter Quell.

“I’m such a fan of his work, it’s been intense being like Woody’s Haymitch,” Zada shares in the new BTS video ‘Meet Haymitch’. “It’s just so special to share that space with him.”

He continues, “Being in this film, I mean it’s the most life changing experience. And this story really hits home, that your involvement, even as insignificant as you think it may be, has the power to change things over time.”

Elle Fanning also shares her experience of taking on Elizabeth Banks’ Effie Trinket and building the same beautiful rapport between Effie and Haymitch that will inform their future dynamic as escort and mentor to Katniss and Peeta.

“Elizabeth and Woody, their dynamic is so fantastic. Joe and I have tried to incorporate that.”

The ‘Meet Haymitch’ featurette contextualises where we find Haymitch as a young man entering his own Hunger Games, and also gives us more new snippets into the film, coming on 20th November.

The Sunrise on the Reaping film is based on the book written by Suzanne Collins, with Lionsgate greenlighting the book to screen adaptation before it had even been published.
