It’s 30 years since Cineworld first opened its doors, so let’s look back at what three decades of cinema magic have brought us. It’s been quite the journey.
During our lifetime, we’ve screened all three Lord of the Rings films, all eight Harry Potter films, six Mission: Impossible sequels, five Jurassic movies, the entire Infinity Saga of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and two Avatar films.
That’s a mega amount of movie magic. We can’t wait to see what the next few decades have in store and to celebrate our 30th anniversary…
Cineworld opens its doors in the golden age of blockbusters (1996)
Back in the days of paper tickets, Stevenage became home to the first Cineworld. You flocked to Mission: Impossible, Twister, and later that year, Jerry Maguire. CGI was changing what we saw on screen. The visual effects in Independence Day blew our minds as the White House was ‘destroyed’.
In a new millennium, this Millennial upped its ticketing game (2000)
We love films. You love films. So we launched Cineworld Unlimited, giving audiences the chance to see as many films as they like each month, as many times as they like. It’s a brilliant way to reward film fans, and it arrived just in time for the modern superhero era, with the release of the first X-Men film. That year also saw the start of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring journeys.
Blockbusters boom again – and the 30th Cineworld opened! (2003)
Cinema had got ambitious, and so had we. Cineworld Castleford became our 30th cinema in just seven years. That year, Finding Nemo pushed boundaries in computer animation, The Matrix Reloaded wowed with its action choreography and effects, and Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl swashbuckled onto our screens, too.
The IMAX odyssey begins… (2012)
In this, the year that the first film ever shot for IMAX was released, we’re proud to celebrate the fact that Cineworld opened its first IMAX auditorium in 2012. At a time when The Odyssey was still a twinkle in Christopher Nolan’s eye, we watched Skyfall and The Dark Knight Rises on IMAX in Crawley and Sheffield. It took a ground-breaking director to shoot specifically for the format, resulting in stunning visuals for audiences worldwide today.
A new team of superheroes hit a new kind of Superscreen… (2014)
Guardians of the Galaxy, our favourite dysfunctional superheroes, ragtag together to shield the universe from cosmic threats. At the same time, Cineworld opened its first SuperScreen in Milton Keynes, where audiences could watch Interstellar and Guardians of the Galaxy on huge screens with state-of-the-art projection and epic sound.
Event cinema is here, along with a new sensory experience – 4DX (2015)
Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Jurassic World, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Spectre thrilled us in 2015. And to make it even more thrilling, we launched 4DX. Exclusive to Cineworld audiences, this extreme sensory cinema takes you into the heart of the movie with strobe lighting, moving seats, plus wind and water effects.
A Bollywood star goes to Cineworld (2015)
In the year the feel-good film Diwale was released, Cineworld Feltham got a very special visitor: one of Bollywood’s biggest stars, Shah Rukh Khan. We’re so proud to have forged such strong links with diverse cinema over the years, and our commitment to international cinema remains strong to this day.
Cineworld teams up with Pudsey and BBC Children in Need (2016)
Another wonderful year for children’s stories saw Finding Dory and The Jungle Book among the new releases, and we launched a partnership with Children in Need. We hold special events and community initiatives to help raise funds to support children and young people across the UK.
Rolling out the red carpet in a new-look Leicester Square (2018)
Leicester Square is home to star-studded film premieres, and we were thrilled to reopen the doors to our iconic cinema in the heart of London’s cinema scene. The refurbishment was extensive, coinciding with the release of record-breaking hits, Avengers: Infinity War, Black Panther, Bohemian Rhapsody and A Star Is Born.
Screens maxx out at Cineworld with SCREENX (2018)
Mission: Impossible – Fallout upped action blockbusters by making this MI more ambitious and spectacular than ever. Meanwhile, we unveiled our most atmospheric and innovative screen yet: the awesome 270º projection. It’s exclusive to Cineworld audiences and is proof of just how seriously we take film.
Celebrating cinema with Cineworld (2022)
As well as being serious about film, we like to celebrate it too. So we launched Cineworld Day to bring more people together to experience movie magic as an audience. Tickets were just £3 across all formats, including premium screenings. The Batman and Avatar: The Way of Water were just some of the films to see that year.
Cinema and UK royalty visit Cineworld (2022)
Thirty-six years after Top Gun, Top Gun: Maverick drew in the crowds – and attracted VIPs to Cineworld Leicester Square. Tom Cruise and the UK royal family visited, marking a defining moment for Cineworld.
Seats just got luxurious with recliners (2025)
With screen boundaries pushed and premium formats ever more popular, luxury was well and truly part of the cinema-going experience. So it was about time we put our feet up… Mums, dads and kids too for that matter, whooped with joy at the reclining seats. From One Battle After Another to KPop Demon Hunters, recliners made us love going to the cinema even more than we did already.
