Delia Owens' book Where the Crawdads Sing was a publishing sensation upon release, and it's sold 4.5 million copies to date. It's therefore little surprise that the upcoming movie adaptation is feverishly anticipated, promising to do justice to the novel's steamy, swampy Deep South atmosphere and tender coming-of-age themes.
Normal People star Daisy Edgar-Jones takes on the pivotal role of Kya. An isolated 'marsh girl', Kya has carved out a self-sufficient lifestyle in the atmospheric wilderness of North Carolina. With her parents now absent, Kya is also regarded with derision and suspicion by her local community.
The story traces Kya's growth to maturity, her love of wildlife and the complex struggle that arises when she finds herself caught between two very different men. When one of them turns up dead, suspicion immediately falls on Kya, who wants nothing more than to live in harmony with nature including the eponymous crawdads (a local slang term for crayfish).
The book was famously championed by Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon and she's also on board the movie in an executive producer capacity. Go behind the scenes with Witherspoon and Edgar-Jones in the following clip as they explain Kya's isolated yet wondrous existence and the importance of bringing Owen's story to the big screen.
