Hot on the heels of the first trailer for The Suicide Squad comes another. It's practically the same thing, absent the swearing and John Cena's filthy observation about what might be found on a tropical island. So, if you wanted to share a trailer featuring a humanoid, grunting shark with your mum or gran, this is probably your safest bet.
Guardians of the Galaxy's James Gunn directs and is set to bring that same sense of anarchic fun to his first DC venture. (He jumped ship from rival studio Marvel after being temporarily fired from Guardians 3.) Of course, we're in far less family-friendly territory with this group of miscreants and oddballs, all villains who have been reluctantly corralled to take part in a top-secret government mission.
So far, so 2016 – but it's time to scrub director David Ayer's take on the material from your mind. This looks like a lot of fun with Idris Elba's Bloodsport, Margot Robbie's returning Harley Quinn and Cena's aforementioned Peacemaker looking to steal the show with their violent antics and off-hand quips. Gunn has always favoured a dark, even twisted, sense of humour (see his 2006 killer slug movie Slither as evidence), and his Suicide Squad looks like an explosion in an irreverence factory.
The Suicide Squad is due for release on 6th August 2021.
