Fresh from the multi-Oscar-winning success of Poor Things, director Yorgos Lanthimos is now busy lining up his next project. The idiosyncratic Greek director returns with Kinds of Kindness, an anthology tale comprising three typically weird narrative strands. The first teaser trailer has been released (scroll down to watch it) and the cast is absolutely stacked.
Poor Things Oscar winner Emma Stone reunites with fellow Poor Things alumni Willem Dafoe and Margaret Qualley. They're joined by Lanthimos newcomers Jesse Plemons, Hong Chau, Mamoudou Athie and Hunter Schafer, plus Joe Alwyn who worked with the director on The Favourite.
The narrative is described as a "triptych fable following a man without choice who tries to take control of his own life; a policeman who is alarmed that his wife, who was missing at sea, has returned and seems a different person; and a woman determined to find a specific someone with a special ability, who is destined to become a prodigious spiritual leader."
That sounds like the Lanthimos we know: oddball, surrealistic, darkly comic, horrific and with plenty of piercing things to say about social norms. And with that ensemble, how could it possibly go wrong? The screenplay was written by Lanthimos and Efthimis Filippou, making this their fourth collaboration after The Lobster, The Killing Of A Sacred Deer and Dogtooth.
Will Kinds of Kindness emerge as a 2025 Oscars frontrunner? Watch the trailer below and make up your own mind. It reaches Cineworld on June 28th – yes, we don't have to wait very long for the next Stone/Lanthimos collaboration.
