What can we expect from next year's Barbie movie? We know it's directed by Greta Gerwig, fresh from her success with 2019's Little Women, and co-written by her partner, director Noah Baumbach.
It's got a blindingly good cast, led by Oscar nominee Margot Robbie as the eponymous Mattel icon. And they've roped In Ryan Gosling to play the airheaded Ken in what's surely an inspired bit of casting. Here's the poster.
It remains to be seen if the filmmakers will pull off the trick of the brilliant LEGO movies, simultaneously championing and satirizing the brand in question.
However, we've got a flavour of the Barbie movie's idiosyncratic humour in the first trailer, which ably spoofs Stanley Kubrick's classic 2001: A Space Odyssey and explores how Barbie's arrival changed dolls and children's toys forever.
Robbie herself appears, occupying the role of 2001's famous monolith, and she's got the look down cold. There's not much more to it other than brief shots of the movie's candy-coloured Barbie world, and little snippets of Gosling and other cast members.
However, we're loving this trailer for its sly, out-there weirdness. Fingers crossed the movie will live up to it. Check out the trailer below and prepare for Barbie's release on July 21, 2023.
